Steep Slope Roof
The slope or slant of a roof is often referred to as the pitch. Pitch is written assuming a run of a foot, or 12 inches, so the ratio describes how much the roof rises for every foot of its run. For example, a roof that rises 4 or 6 inches for every 12 inches of run has a 4/12 or 6/12 pitch respectively.
Most pitched residential roofs fall into this pitch category, and the roofing materials most often used are traditional 3-tab or architectural asphalt shingles.
We use Owens Corning shingles and materials due to the fact that they have been tested together and are manufactured in Florida.
Three-tab shingles are marginally less expensive than architectural shingles and have a working lifespan of about 15 years. They have a 60 mph wind resistant rating.
Architectural shingles are a higher quality shingle and can last for up to 25 years. They cost a little bit more than three-tab shingles but give your home a more refined appearance. Architectural shingles come with a 130 mph wind resistant rating. Generally, they are considered to be the best asphalt shingles available.
Of Asphalt Shingles
Low Maintenance
Asphalt shingles, when properly chosen and installed, require little or no regular upkeep, and are easily repaired if damaged. While you will need to keep an eye on your roof for loss of shingles or algae growth, your roof should remain in good shape with minimal maintenance, and repairs can be easily made if anything goes wrong.
Affordability
The efficient, high-volume production and relatively low cost of asphalt shingles provide consumers with an overall value that’s tough for other roofing materials to match, especially in terms of comparable life expectancy.
Ease of Application
Asphalt shingles are considered to be the easiest of all standard roofing materials to apply. In addition, the flexibility and strength of asphalt shingles supports their application on a wide variety of roof designs.
Versatile
Because there are so many manufacturers, and installation is so widespread, asphalt shingles are available in wide array of styles and colors to fit any aesthetic vision.
Durability
Manufacturer warranties currently guarantee asphalt shingles between 15 years and a limited lifetime warranty. Why the span? Product selection, climate, weather and environmental factors. Homeowners in our neck of the woods who endure long hot summers may need to replace roofing sooner than homeowners in cooler regions.
Fire and Wind Resistance
Asphalt shingles are manufactured to resist external fire and carry Class A, B or C fire ratings, with Class A providing the greatest fire resistance. These fire ratings are defined by nationally recognized standards and tested by independent testing agencies. In addition, many asphalt shingles carry a “wind resistance” label indicating that they have been manufactured and tested to demonstrate acceptable resistance in high-wind locations.
